The Col. James Wood, II Chapter supports a wide variety of programs in schools, the community and support of our modern day heroes and veterans.

Youth Awards Programs

ROTC Awards - Arrange with local high school and/or college ROTC officials for the awarding of ROTC Medals. This SAR program has the full support and approval of the Department of Defense.

Joseph S. Rumbaugh Oration Contest - Arrange with local high schools for their participation in the Joseph S. Rumbaugh Oration Contest. The National Association of Secondary School Principals has placed this contest on the Approved List of National Contests and Activities.Cash Scholarships awarded at the local, state and national levels.

George S. and Stella M. Knight Essay Contest - Arrange with local high school authorities for the participation by students who are in grades 9-12. Cash Scholarships awarded at the local, state and national levels.

Arthur M. & Berdena King Eagle Scout Scholarship - Open to all Eagle Scouts who are currently registered in an active unit and have not reached their 19th birthday during the year of application. (The application year is the calendar year, 01 Jan. to 31 Dec.) The year that Eagle was awarded is not restricted. College plans do not need to be completed in order to receive the cash scholarship. Three cash scholarship awards are given: As the National First Place winner - $8,000.00; Runner-up - $4,000.00; 2nd runner-up - $2,000.00.

Americanism Elementary School Poster Contest - This contest is directed at students in the 3rd, 4th or 5th grades, depending on which year the American Revolution is taught in their educational system - including ecumenical and home schooled students. Cash scholarships and prizes awarded at the local, state and national levels.

Community & Public Service Awards

Tom & Betty Lawrence American History Teacher Award - The National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, whose mission and objectives are patriotic, historical, and educational, wish to identify, recognize, and commend Outstanding Social Studies Teachers. These extraordinary educators at private, public, and parochial institutions, who teach our children in a middle or high school setting, will be recognized for actively addressing the history of the American Revolutionary era. The Tom & Betty Lawrence American History Teacher Award winner will represent a teacher whose instruction on the Revolutionary War era from 1750 - 1800 demonstrates educational efforts in the classroom that exceed and excel above current, accepted, curriculum requirements. We seek out nominations from within the community at-large and our local school systems from September 1 - August 31st each year.

Good Citizen of the Year - Designed to recognize an individual service to the nation, state and community by awarding appropriate Good Citizenship medals with approval of the proper authority. We seek out nominations from within the community at-large from September 1 - August 31st each year.

Law Enforcement Commendation Medal - Awarded annually to a deserving Law Enforcement officers when justified by their bravery, length of service or contribution to the community. We seek out nominations from all local law enforcement officials from September 1 - August 31st each year.

Fire Safety Commendation Medal - Awarded annually to a deserving Firefighter when justified by their bravery, length of service or contribution to the community. We seek out nominations from all local fire departments from September 1 - August 31st each year.

Emergency Medical Services Commendation Medal - Awarded annually to a deserving Paramedic or certified Emergency Medical Technician who performed an act or service beyond what is normally expected in an area of emergency medical services. It may be presented only to an individual and may be only presented once. The medal may also be presented posthumously. We seek out nominations from September 1 - August 31st each year.

Medal for Heroism - Awarded to a deserving citizen for acts of bravery. It recognizes outstanding bravery and self-sacrifice in the face of imminent danger, i.e., acts which involve great personal courage and risk to the recipient. It is intended primarily for acts by civilians not in uniform but does not exclude police, firemen, and SAR members. It is not intended to recognize acts which would have been covered by armed forces medals for valor. The medal may also be presented posthumously. We seek out nominations from within the community at-large from September 1 - August 31st each year. ALL recipients will receive their award at our annual awards meeting.

Educational and Community Outreach

US Constitution - We will provide a framed facsimiles of the US Constitution for the local government buildings; bus, train and airport waiting rooms; schools ; libraries; courtrooms; police and fire stations.

Grave Markings -We will supply, place and dedicate SAR grave markers (granite or bronze) at the graves of Revolutionary War Patriots and SAR Compatriots.

Speakers Bureau - Our Chapter will furnish capable and interesting speakers to schools, organizations, public meetings, graduations, forums, and to radio and TV stations, especially on patriotic holidays and anniversaries, as requested. Please use our contact form to make the request.

Veterans Programs - Take part in the Volunteer Services Programs at local Veterans' Hospitals, Clinics and/or Retirement Homes. Participate in the National Society USS Stark Memorial Award and the General William C. Westmoreland Award Programs.

Flag Award - We will seek out and recognize individuals, companies and government agencies that fly the United States flag in the appropriate manner as described by the Flag Code and for patriotic purposes only.

Colonel James Wood II Chapter Color Guard - Used to attract the attention of the general public to the activities of the Colonel James Wood II Chapter in particular and the Virginia Society as well. Our Chapter's Color Guard has been used to open and close meetings and ceremonies of the SAR, DAR, and other organizations. They have participated at or in parades, memorial and commemoration services, grave markings, and other public events. Color Guardsmen are frequently asked questions concerning their uniforms and equipment and have significant opportunities to educate the public on Revolutionary life, events and history.
