The Col. James Wood, II Color Guard
In 2007, the Colonel James Wood, II Chapter formed and it found among its members two fully outfitted guardsmen. The two members quickly formed the Color Guard unit for the chapter. Recruiting other members of the chapter and outfitting them with spare reenactor clothing, the Guard immediately numbered 5 men. A short while later, compatriot Rob Andrews became commander of the Virginia Society Colorguard for two years.
The Color Guard got an auspicious start when it garnered press coverage for its first three official events.
The enthusiasm of the members, the community and the media for the colorful Color Guard led to its rapid growth. The unit now boasts 7 members and several who serve on a provisional basis. Among the guard members is a past Commander of the Virginia Colorguard, two Silver Color Guard medalists, four Bronze Color Guard Medalists and Virginia's only recipient of the Baron Von Steuben National Service Recognition Medal.
Covering a 5 county area of Virginia, the Col. James Wood, II Color Guard is a Regional Virginia Color Guard Command in itself. Participating in 8-10 local events and several state and national events annually, the Color Guard is the most visible ambassador of the Sons of the American Revolution and inspires patriotism where ever they are seen
Always present at Grave Markings, the Guard is also seen in the community at Parades, Festivals and Commemorative and Memorial Events. The Col. James Wood, II Color Guard is available to support community, memorial/commemorative and educational events in the Frederick, Clarke, Page, Warren and Shenandoah County areas.
